Living the dream. The lodges’ history started in 1992 following a family’s dream to live in the African bush. During their search for a suitable a piece of land, the Venter family came across a plot next to the Kuvjename River and immediately fell in love with it. So they decided to leave city life behind and move to the tranquillity of the bush. Within a few years four chalets were built for the family to live in together. Over the years Dawn, with her passionate green fingers, nurtured a lush and most serene garden with numerous indigenous trees.
Giving back to the wild. Formerly the land and the surrounding area were used for cattle farming and in 1998 the seven landowners decided to drop their fences and create a Big 5 conservancy. Gradually wild animals were re-introduced. Those were exciting days indeed, with elephants and lions strolling through the Venter’s gardens, right in front of their doorstep! Subsequently the lodge’s surrounds were fenced to keep pesky tuskers from destroying Dawn’s carefully tended gardens.
Sharing a special place. The Venter family always wanted to share their little piece of paradise with other people. So after the Venter’s sons moved on, the idea of a private game lodge was born and in 2005 the gates of Indlovu River Lodge opened to share this little piece of heaven with you – our guest. Our chalets and suites are named after the celebrated “Great Tusker” elephants of the Kruger Park: Shingwedzi, Shawu, Kambaku and Ndlulamithi.
